Artistic, Educational, & Passionate
John Brennan's marching band arrangements have been featured all over the great state of Ohio, Arizona, & Wyoming. John has a philosophy of writing educational and progressive music for the marching & wind band medium all while creating aesthetically pleasing music. The primary focus of Mr. Brennan's work is in the compositional construction of the music, the aesthetic qualities of music, and remaining vigilant of the performers needs and responsibilities. His ultimate goal is to maximize the performers potential while fostering musical growth through compositionally sound writing.
Currently pursuing his Masters Degree in Music Education at THE Ohio State University, John is refining his philosophy of music education. Through the curricula at Ohio State Mr. Brennan is not only able to grow as an educator but further his compositional and arranging skills.
Update January 20, 2014: Personal Growth, and New Opportunities
The last year and a half has been absolutely incredible (and busy). I had another enjoyable season, filled with lots of great memories with The Ohio State University Marching Band. In addition to working with the OSUMB, I also get the opportunity to work with The Ohio State University Athletic Band which is an equally enriching experience. This academic school year marks my final season as a Graduate Teaching Assistant with the OSU Marching & Athletic Bands. I'll be finishing my GTA responsibilities out this semester, and should hopefully be graduating this spring upon completion of my master's work, focusing on Show Design and Wind Arranging for Marching Ensembles.
Over the last two years I have felt a huge amount of growth in my writing. I feel this is partially due to my master's work, and my constant push for self improvement. Experience is the best method of teaching. I learned a lot by writing for two high schools (Newark HS, & Bishop Watterson HS) for their 2013 competitive seasons and look forward to working with them again for the 2014 season. I also completed my second arrangement for Dominion MS during the early fall months. I look forward to working with them again in the near future!
I have just over the last week completed the OSU Spring Football Game Halftime Show for the OSUAB. You will have to attend the spring game in order to find out what we are going to do. I will say this, I feel this is some of my best writing to date.
Show design has begun already for the 2014 OSUMB season. Definitely won't say what the show concept is, but I think we are going to have fun with this one. I have also been picked up by a major publishing company (won't say whom at this point).
The biggest highlight for me with everything going on is that my wife and I are expecting a baby. The baby should arrive at the end of May!
I look forward to seeing all my friends and colleagues at the Ohio Music Educators Association Convention here in a few weeks!
All of my Best!
